Rasa Purnima Is Observed On The Full Moon Day Dedicated To Hindu God Jagannath

About Rasa Purnima:

Rasa Purnima is observed on the full moon day in the month of Kartik month in Orissa. The day is dedicated to the worship of Radha and Krishna – especially to the Rasa leelas of Sri Krishna. Rasa yatra of Sri Radha Madhava is also held on the day.

The day is also of great importance at the temples dedicated to Hindu god Jagannath. Special rituals are held on the day at the Puri Jagannath Temple.

All the temples & Mathas in this region celebrate Rasa Purnima,  Lord Krishna’s Rasa dance, a dance that represents the most perfectintimacy between the soul and God.

The main attraction here is the decoration in the temple. Jagannatha Matha, Brundabana Chandra Jeu, Rahasa Bihari Kunja, Thakur Das Matha, Gopinatha Jiu are very popular for its decoration. Temples & Mathas are decorated as ‘Kunja bana’. Sola, Jari and Cuttack’s famous Tarakasi work can be seen in this decoration.

All day temples will be busy with Bhajan & daily puja rituals. But the main attraction is in night. People from all parts of Jajpur come here in the evening to visit temples.

Note – The Sharad Purnima (October 15, 2016) which is observed on the full moon day in Ashwin month is also referred as Rasa Purnima in North India.
